Let Me Count the Ways: Springtime Reflections

April, 2004

Spring has finally sprung in Maine on April 18th, in my humble opinion. How do I know? Well, let me count the ways…

1. The sun is moving in a higher arc through the sky.

2. We are opening the windows during the day and evening hours and do not have to run the house heat anymore.

3. The pond ice has completely melted and we are able to canoe and kayak over the entire pond surface.

4. The last vestiges of snow are hiding in shady spots in the woods.

5. The migrating Canadian goose has arrived for a few days of rest on the pond before flying off to its final destination.

6. The buffle head ducks (2 pair) have landed and are settling into their daily routine of quacking, eating, swimming, and flying around the pond.

7. The purple finches are flocking to the bird feeder to add some much needed color to our local air ways.

8. A nuthatch has begun its nest in the same tree as last year, directly across the street from our house. We’ll have a bird’s eye view of its activities.

9. The tulip and daffodil bulbs are sending tender shoots above the soil surface.

10. The wood frogs, followed by the spring peepers, are making their presence known in the late afternoon and evening hours by serenading us with their quaint croaking songs.

11. The anticipation of summer is growing by leaps and bounds. There are only 8 weeks till the school year ends!
